Tour – The Lounge

We had all the downstairs doors widened to wheelchair width, so you enter the lounge through the old doorway but it’s a bit wider.

I’d say this room was relatively unchanged, but we ripped the fireplace out and put a studio fire in – so in addition to the lack of radiators (underfloor heating) it makes the room seem a bit wider.

We also took the front window out and installed large french windows at the front – out on to a new little south facing patio – the sunniest spot on the plot!

This is probably a good moment to mention the windows.  We replaced the whole lot in the end with Danish triple glazed windows. They are aluminium on the outside and wood on the inside. Very nice they are – and look very contemporary – no white horizontal lines anywhere!  All the upstairs windows are reversible so they can be cleaned from the inside.

I might also mention the interior doors. All widened downstairs and the pre-existing width upstairs. Gone are the horrid old mahogany panelled 1970s doors. These doors are solid oak with a beautiful weight and feel,  The handles are all from Karcher in Germany and bolt through the doors to each other, so no more “hanging off” looks!!  The handles are in stainless steel and polished stainless steel shiny bits.  They also have their own return springs which you would think was no big deal but on the double doors, where there are no latches, it is important that the handles feel the same as every other door. The carpenter said He’d “never seen anything like them”.  I was surprised too that it took over two weeks I think to hang all the doors – there are quite a lot of matching wardrobe doors in addition to the house doors. Over 30 I think in total. By the way, the wardrobe door handles match the kitchen handles….

Tour – Dining Room

The dining room is entered via double doors from the Hall, and there are an extra set of double doors at the north end directly into the kitchen.  It’s come out quite a lot larger than originally imagined.

The flooring is called Applewood.

The room has a bifold door out on to a shady little patio at the back.

The north end of the room is brightened up by a massive Velux roof window – computer controlled!!  With Blind… computer controlled!!

You enter from the Hall through these double doors.

Tour – The Kitchen

We have got to be very pleased with our new kitchen. There are three ways in – a wide door from the Hall, double doors from the dining Room, and a door from the sewing room in the west wing.  There are large triple bifold doors out onto the north patio.

You can just see at the garden end that the idea is to have a little breakfast area and a couple of lounging chairs. The new table and chairs for that spot are coming from Italy – so  guess that will arrive much later in 2020 after the virus restrictions have eased. For the lounging chairs we have temporarily a garden chair and an IKEA chair, but eventually the idea is to go for Ecornes Stressless chairs.

A lot of people ask about the main cabinet colour – it is called Hague Blue.  The upper cupboards are in Dove Grey. The steam ovens and induction hob are from Neff.  Just realised you cannot see the island warming drawer in any of these photos!  The storage is split roughly half and half between drawers and cupboards.

There is an overhang for bar stools at one end of the island, so the power sockets have been turned through 90 degrees to ease access.

Larder !!

Neff induction hob with downdraught extraction!

Neff steam ovens – web controlled but we haven’t got as far as figuring that out.

Miele fridge with some kind of clever fruit and veg storage at the bottom.

This smart kitchen tap is called a Quooker.  It does normal hot and cold water, plus you can have instant boiling water (no need for a kettle any more!) or filtered cold water.

Sorry about the mess in the sink !!

Tour – The Sewing Room

Also completely new is the sewing room.  It lies at the beginning of the new west wing and sits in the space that used to be the outdoor gap between the old house and the garage.

It’s an amazing and huge room – kind of V-shaped, with computerised roof windows and folding doors to the North Patio. One area is ready plumbed to put a bathroom in if needed one day. The roof joists are pre-arranged to get in a lift to the upper floor if ever needed.

Tour – Bedroom 1

This room has less changes than most.

The dreadful old 1970s sliding door wardrobes have been replaced with something matching the house overall.  All the ceilings of the property were removed and replaced (asbestos) so the room has a much nicer feel now – and lovely new snug triple glazed windows.

Rdaiators were replaced everywhere upstairs by very contemporary looking radiators called “Plane Concord”.  The slats run horizontally – and they have fins on the back making them very efficient. Bedroom one is the largest, so needs the largest radiator.

The en-siute remains unchanged, except for the ceiling, lights and fan have been replaced.    The towel rail type radiators now work on the new heating system and can be electrically warmed in summer.

With the new heating system, each room has its own thermostat, and if you wish, it’s own daily programme.  The whole thing is controlled by the iPhone or iPad. These so called web platforms are the coming trend – there are four switched on now :

  • Underfloor heating, radiators, hot water and hot water “loop” (like you get in hotels for instant hot water when you turn the tap on)
  • Alarm system
  • Velux roof windows
  • Electric doorbell and motion sensor cameras at the front and driveway

We are yet to commission the web platforms for the ovens, warming drawer and tumble dryer!

New furniture awaited !!

Unfurnished as yet – furniture on order from Italy – no idea when or even if it will show up because of the crisis.

Tour – Bedroom 2… quite a lot has changed

Quite a lot has changed in bedroom 2.  A dressing room has been added (along with the house’s new airing cupboard) as well as another lovely bathroom.

The view out over the garden has been radically changed too.

The new dressing room – on the left is the new airing cupboard, then a double wardrobe alongside.
