Progress June 10th – No Bricklaying Possible Due to Heavy Rain
Pouring with rain today so no bricklaying possible. Muddy so I stayed at the gate!!
One cassette of bricks has been manhandled to the rear of the property ready to go, and the other remains on the south side for the front walls. I think there are more coming.
Instead the crew are making use of the time by ripping out all the ground floor screed. They have shifted one skip full already and tomorrow’s skip is lined up. Nick is keen to find out if the remaining internal walls are laid on to the slab or the on to the screed. If the former then “no problem”, but if the latter, additional actions will be needed.

How Drains Work !!
I’ve got a bit confused about how the drains are going to work. I’ll try and see Nick for a full tutorial next week. In the meantime, Chris came over and helped interpret what we can see today (25th May)
First thing, surface (and roof) water drainage to soakaways :
As far as I can recall, the previous soakaways were merely gravel pits at each corner of the roof. Things have tightened up and I suspect put the new soakaway cages under the new patio area. Chris thinks they have to be five feet or metres away from the building.

The far north east corner of the roof has a new pipe leading to this junction box behind the lounge.
There is another one to the right of the patio door to be the main drain for the expanse of flat roof.

It looks like this little network of surface water pipes then leads along a long thin one beneath the back path, between the two hatches you can see here. Then I reckon it leads to the soakaway cages beneath the patio.
So that leaves the soil pipes leading to the main drain of the house and to the sewers.
Now this is a bit harder to understand, as I cant actually see a lot of what I thought I’d see. Until I chat to the builder I’m going to assume that the old main north south drain of the house has been retained and lies too far below the surface to see it.
There is a soil pipe for the ensuite bathroom right at the north east corner and that must run into the main pipe.

It must be under here somewhere. Then it ruins westwards across the back of the house, under the new floor – hopefully it meets the main bathroom soil pipe somewhere at the north west corner of the dining room.

Now the mystery to me is that I cannot see it, but already may be buried too deep to see. I also want to discuss rodding access for this with Nick.

Then it should all meet at this circular junction in this picture at the north west corner of the old house. And it turns 90 degrees left and heads south under the new family room floor towards the main junction.
Unexpectedly for me, you cannot see these pipes below the floor lintels. I assume they are too deep, but I will find out.
Also in the photo above, on the right hand side you can see the soil pipe for the utility room. That must also head straight to the circular junction.

In this photo above, you can imagine the main drain running from the circular junction across the back under the floor.

Then it runs down to this circular junction at the south end of the run. Here it should meet the drain from the family room soil pipe that you see on the left, one brick width out from the garage wall. Also meeting here should be the new kitchen drain of which there is no evidence yet.

The bushes at the kitchen window are still planted so I assume they will wait till work on the new interior floor starts before putting this drain in.
Then the main drain runs out of this circular junction to the rectangular and pre-existing main drain junction. Here it meets the cloakroom soil pipe and the whole lot leads to the sewers.
I must ask if we are having new soakaway drainage at the south (front) corners of the house.
Velux Lanterns for Flat Roofs
I called Velux to ask about London Showrooms but their only showroom is in Scotland!!
They did though send the photos below and click here to see their video about curved glass flat window installations.
They said the distributors locally are Travis Perkins, Jewsons and Parker Supplies. Ads they are all stock products delivery should be within a few days.
